e) Discharging the battery ("DISCHARGE")
To bring partially charged NiMH/NiCd batteries to a defined initial state, discharge them by means of this battery
program.
The maximum discharge current depends on the battery type, battery capacity and number of cells. The
max. discharge power of the charger is 80 W; this limits the max. possible discharge current in batteries with
multiple cells.
NiCd batteries, in particular, should not be recharged when in a partially charged state, as this may reduce the
capacity (memory effect).
The battery program can also be utilized to measure the battery's capacity.
Proceed as follows when discharging NiMH or NiCd batteries:
• As described in Chapter 12. a), set the battery type (NiMH or NiCd) and
select the battery program "DISCHARGE".
The set battery type is shown top left on the display and the battery
program next to it on the right. The value at the bottom left indicates the
present set discharging current; the value to the right is the cut-off voltage.
Use the "INC" or "DEC" buttons to select a different battery program; return to the main menu with the button
"BATT/PROG/STOP".
• If you need to change the value of the discharge current and the cut-off voltage, press the "ENTER/START" button
briefly. The discharging current flashes.
• Set the discharge current with the "INC" and "DEC" buttons. Press and hold the respective button a little longer for
fast adjustment.
• When pressing the „ENTER/START' button briefly the cut-off voltage starts flashing.
• Set the discharging current with the buttons "INC" and "DEC". Press and hold the respective button a little longer
for fast adjustment.
• Press the "ENTER/START" button briefly to confirm your setting. The indicator stops flashing.
Proceed as described above to modify the discharge or cut-off voltage again, if desired.
• Press and hold the "ENTER/START" button (approx. 3 seconds) to start the discharging process.
The charger will beep if the settings are wrong or a malfunction is detected and the corresponding informati-
on is displayed on the screen. End the warning signal with the "BATT/PROG/STOP" button, and the charger
will go back to the previous setup menu.
During the discharging process, the following data may be displayed on the screen:
The battery type ("NiMH" = NiMH battery) is shown at the top left, the
discharging current top centre and the current battery voltage top right.
Bottom left has the current battery program ("DSC" = "DISCHARGE"); the
elapsed discharged time is in the middle, and to the right is the discharged
capacity in mAh.
• An audible signal sounds (if this feature has not been turned off) when discharging is complete.
Press the "BATT/PROG/STOP" button if you wish to abort discharging.
