12. NIMH AND NICD BATTERIES
a) General
The battery programs for NiMH and NiCd batteries basically differ only in the charging method used internally. The
menu settings are the same.
The charger must be in the main menu.
Here you can select the battery type (NiMH or NiCd) that matches your
battery with the "INC" or "DEC" buttons; see images to the right.
Confirm your selection by pressing the "ENTER/START" button.
With the "INC" and "DEC" buttons, you can then select the different battery
programs:
• "CHARGE": Charging the battery
• "Auto CHARGE": Charge the battery, automatically select charge current
• "DISCHARGE": Discharging the battery
• "RE-PEAK": Repeated recharge of a full battery
• "CYCLE": Multiple charge/discharge cycles or discharge/charge cycles
b) Charging the battery ("CHARGE")
The charge current to be set depends on the battery's capacity and should normally be 1C (see also Chapter 7).
High-quality batteries tolerate a charging current of up to 2C. However, it is imperative to pay attention to the battery
manufacturer's specifications.
The indication "1C" means that the charging current corresponds to the value of the battery capacity. For a
3000 mAh NiMH battery at 1C, the charging current is set to 3 A.
A value of 0.5 C means that the charging current is half of the capacity value. For a NiMH battery with a
capacity of 3000 mAh, 0.5C means that the charging current is set to 1.5 A.
As a rule of thumb: The smaller the battery (that is, the single cell), the lower the maximum charging current.
For example, conventional NiMH Mignon/AA cells with a capacity of 2000 mAh do not allow for a charge
current of 1C (this would be equal to a charging current of 2 A). Never set those cells (such as in receiver
batteries) to higher than 0.5 C when fast charging.
Proceed as follows when charging NiMH or NiCd batteries:
• As already described in Chapter 12. a), first select the battery type (NiMH or NiCd) from the main menu with the
buttons "INC" or "DEC" and press "ENTER/START".
• Use the "INC" or "DEC" buttons to select the battery program "CHARGE".
The value at the bottom right indicates the present set charging current.
Use the "INC" or "DEC" buttons to select a different battery program;
return to the main menu with the button "BATT/PROG/STOP".
