11. LITHIUM BATTERIES (LIPO, LIION, LIFE, LIHV)
a) General
Basically, the battery programs for LiPo, LiIon, LiFe and LiHV batteries differ only in voltage and permissible char-
ging current; see table in Chapter 7.
Charging a lithium battery involves two distinct phases. The battery is first charged with constant current. When
the battery reaches the maximum voltage (4.2 V in a LiPo battery, for example), charging continues with constant
voltage (but the charging current drops). If the charging current drops below a certain level, charging stops and the
battery is fully charged.
If the battery comes with a balancer connection (this is usually the case in almost all lithium batteries
with more than one cell), then not only the connection cable of the battery, but also that of the balancer
connection must be connected to the charger for charging/discharging the battery.
Various types of balancer plugs are available. So do not use any force if the plug does not fit into the
charger or on the balancer board! Accessory suppliers have matching adapters for the balancer plugs.
There are also rare multi-cell batteries where the cell terminals need to be pulled out separately, and
strictly speaking, those are not really multi-cell battery packs. Therefore, it is important to note the battery
manufacturer's specifications related to design and rated voltage.
Only when using a balancer (integrated in the charger) will all cells of a multi-cell battery pack have
the same voltage after charging. Overcharging of one of the cells (fire and explosion hazard) or a deep
discharge of a cell (battery damage) will not happen.
Setting the charging current depends on the capacity of the battery and the design (see Chapter 7). In
every case, observe the battery information provided by the battery manufacturer.
The charger must be in the main menu.
Here you can select the battery type (LiPo, LiIon, LiFe or LiHV) that matches
your battery with the "INC" or "DEC" buttons; see figures to the right.
Confirm your selection by pressing the "ENTER/START" button.
You can then select the different battery programs with the "INC" and "DEC"
buttons:
• "BALANCE": Charging the lithium battery with balancer connection
• "CHARGE": Charging the lithium battery without balancer connection
• "FAST CHG": Fast charging a battery
• "STORAGE": Charging/discharging the batteries until a certain voltage
value is reached (e.g. for storage)
• "DISCHARGE": Discharging the battery
• "MICRO CHG": Charging method using low charging current only via the balancer connector
• "MICRO STORE": Charging/discharging the batteries until a certain voltage value is reached (e.g. for storage);
charging/discharging happens via the balancer only.
