• Never charge/discharge a battery directly inside the model. Remove the battery from the model first.
• Place charger and battery on a non-flammable, heat-resistant surface (e.g. a stone tile). Maintain
sufficient distance to flammable objects. Leave sufficient space between charger and battery, and never
place the battery on the charger.
• Both the charger and the battery connected will get hot during the charging/discharging; therefore, take
care that adequate ventilation is available. Never cover the charger and the battery!
b) Additional information about lithium batteries
Modern batteries equipped with lithium technology have not only a significantly higher capacity than NiMH or NiCd
batteries, but also a considerable lower weight. This makes this type of battery very attractive for the use in model
making, where mostly so-called LiPo batteries (lithium polymer) are used.
However, lithium batteries require special care when charging/discharging and during operation and handling.
In the following paragraphs, therefore, we wish to inform you about the dangers involved and how to avoid them, so
that such batteries can retain their capacity for a long time.
Note also Chapter 6. a).
• The outer shell of many lithium batteries consists of only a thick film and is thus very sensitive.
Never disassemble or damage the battery; never let it fall and do not stick any objects into the battery!
Avoid exposing the battery to any mechanical load; never pull on the battery's connection cables! This
might cause a fire or explosion!
Remember this when you attach the battery to the model, or when removing it from the model.
• Make sure that the battery does not overheat when operating, charging or discharging, transporting or
storing the battery. Do not place the battery near sources that emit heat (e.g. speed controller, motor),
and keep the battery out of direct sunlight. Battery overheating can result in a fire and explosion!
The battery should never exceed the temperature of 60 °C (pay attention to any additional instructions
from the manufacturer!).
• Stop using the battery if the battery shows signs of damage (e.g. after a crash of an airplane or helicop-
ter model) or if the outer shell looks swollen/bloated. Do not recharge it again. This might cause a fire or
explosion!
Handle the battery carefully and use suitable protective gloves. Dispose of the spent battery in an
environmentally friendly way.
• Charge a lithium battery only with the appropriate charger and use the proper charging methods.
Conventional chargers for NiCd, NiMH or lead-acid batteries should not be used; using them may result
in a fire and explosion!
• When charging a lithium battery with more than one cell, ensure that you are using a so-called balancer
(e.g. already integrated in the charger supplied here).
• Charge LiPo batteries with a charging current of max. 1C (unless otherwise provided by the battery
manufacturer!) This means that the charging current should not exceed the capacity printed on the
battery (e.g. battery capacity 1000 mAh, max. charging current 1000 mA = 1 A).
It is imperative that you observe the battery manufacturer's specifications for LiFe, LiIon and LiHV
batteries.
