INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
! WARNING: After use, if the AlphaTec® 6500 suit is chemically or biologically contaminated or
mechanically damaged in any way it MUST be disposed of. The suit should only be re-used if it
has not been contaminated or damaged in any way.
Low temperature use and fogging of visor
The anti-fog treatment, AlphaTec® AF3, must be used in low temperature environments but it is
recommended to always use it, regardless of climate and temperature. It should be applied to
the inside and outside of the visor to improve its resistance to fogging/misting. AlphaTec® AF3
spray is supplied with the suit.
AlphaTec® AF3 application - apply to visor using following method
- spray the AlphaTec® AF3 solution onto a dry cloth
- spray the inside and outside of the suit visor ensuring full and even coverage.
- lightly wipe the visor using the cloth to ensure even distribution.
- It is also recommended to apply AlphaTec® AF3 to the outside of the SCBA face piece visor.
The cloth used to apply AlphaTec® AF3 can be stored in the pocket situated below the visor to
wipe the inside of the visor should fogging/misting occur.

4.3 Temperature of Use

-5°C to +65°C
! CAUTION: AlphaTec® 6500 is a non-breathable material so the wearer's body temperature may
rise during use. The workload should therefore be planned to reduce the risk of heat stress.
Short-term use in higher or lower temperatures is possible but great caution must be taken with
regards to heat stress/burn injuries and frost bite for the user.
! NOTICE - Most performance properties of the suit and its components cannot be tested by
the user in the field.

5. Pre-use

5.1 Prior to use

Review all instructions and inspect the clothing for any damage that could affect its protective
function.
The inspection shall consist of the following steps:
• Visual inspection of both inside and outside.
• Look for surface damages on material, seams, visor, boots (if fitted), inner and outer gloves.
• Check function of zipper and zipper fitting.
• Check the function of the exhaust valves and, if fitted, passthrough. Make certain that they are
firmly mounted and not damaged.
! WARNING: If damage/malfunction is found, the suit must be not be used.
For low temperature environments
• AlphaTec® AF3 anti-fog treatment must be applied (see section 4.2)
• Wear undergarments suited for the situation, if cold weather or risk of contact with cold
chemicals, wear insulating underwear.

5.2 Donning (Dressing) Procedure

(FIG. illustrations can be found on page 120)
• For safety purposes and to ensure proper closure it is necessary to have an assistant
("Buddy") to help with the donning and doffing of the suit.
• Try to find a clean area to stand on free from potential contaminants or general debris. If
deemed necessary (i.e. for outside donning) layout a salvage sheet(s). As appropriate, the
wearer should remove boots, personal jewellery and any sharp objects.
The assistant should then help with the following dressing sequence:
• If optional pass thru is fitted the couplings must be checked for compatibility with the SCBA
being used then connected once the suit is at waist height during donning.
• Wearer dons SCBA set in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, leaving the facemask
hanging from its strap around their neck. (Fig 1)
• If radio communications are to be used they should be tested prior to the wearer donning the
suit.
• With assistance, the wearer steps into the suit and lifts it to waist level, ensuring your feet are
positioned correctly in the socks or the permanently attached boots. The socks are designed
to be worn inside chemical protective wellington boots (sold separately), with the over-flap
positioned over the top of the wellington boot opening. (Fig 2-5)
• Carry out necessary pre-entry checks, switch on the SCBA and put on the face mask in
accordance with manufacturer's instructions. (Fig 6)
• Wearer folds arms across their chest, whilst the assistant lifts suit over SCBA and the wearer's
head. (Fig 7-8)
• Assistant should arrange suit/visor for comfort and carefully but firmly zip up the suit, the zip
is fully closed with the flap secured by the Velcro in the correct place. (Fig 9)
• Wearer can now slide arms into sleeves and place hands into the attached gloves. (Fig 10)
• Pull the zipper straight, using two hands. Never force it! If it jams, gently pull it back and try
again. Make sure the zipper is fully closed.
! WARNING: Handle the zipper with care. A damaged zipper can cause serious injury or death.
6. In-use
During the intervention, make sure to:
• Minimize the exposure to chemicals
• Avoid direct contact with the chemicals as far as possible
6.1 Procedure for checking manometer / pressure gauge
To check the manometer/pressure gauge, the hand must be retracted from the glove:
- Grab the right glove with your left hand
- Pull the right hand into the suit
- Check the manometer/radio/other
- Put the right hand back into the glove again
- To pull the left hand into the suit, instead grab the left glove with your right hand
7. After-use

7.1 Decontamination

After a response in hazardous environment, the suit must be decontaminated before taking it
off, to protect the wearer from contamination.
• Make sure to have an assistant for the decontamination.
• The assistant also needs to wear suitable protective clothing and possibly respiratory
protection.
• Rinse the suit with plenty of water, preferably with added detergent.

7.2 Doffing (Removing the Protective Suit)

• Open the zip cover. Carefully open the zip by pulling gently. As the zip slider moves, hold on
to the suit material at the same level. Opening with excessive force can cause
irreparable damage.
• Pull your arms from the sleeves and hold on to the visor from the inside.
• Open the protective suit carefully.
• Pull the protective suit off.
! WARNING:
If the AlphaTec® 6500 suit is chemically contaminated or mechanically damaged in any way
it MUST be disposed of. The suit should only be re-used if it has not been contaminated or
damaged in any way – see Section 5.1

7.3 Disposal

Dispose of garments according to local regulations and if contaminated the contaminants must
be taken into account.

8. Storage

Ansell products may be stored according to customary storage practices. It is recommended
that the suit is stored in its original box, in a dry, clean condition, folded in such away so as not to
damage the visor with the zip slightly open (approx. 10cm/4") and fully waxed.

8.1 Storage conditions

• Dry with a humidity upper limit of 70%
• Room temperature, 5 - 30 °C
• Away from direct sunlight
• Away from ozone-generating sources, for example electrical engines, fluorescent lamps and
air-conditioners
! CAUTION: If storing the protective suit on vehicles or containers abrasion through permanent
friction with the contact surface must be avoided

8.2 Shelf life

If stored correctly and maintained in strict accordance with these instructions, the projected
shelf-life of AlphaTec® 6500 is 10 years.

9. Maintenance

All maintenance work shall be carried out by qualified service engineers or technicians and must
be noted on the record card supplied with each suit. The maintenance periods specified below
refer only to the protective suit ensemble.
! WARNING: The suit should only be re-used if it has not been contaminated or damaged in any
way. No attempt to repair the suit should be made by unauthorised persons.
Before re-storage into the supplied container the suit must be tested to ISO 17491-1 internal
pressure test, to check for any leaks (section 9.2).
