If such a LiPo battery is charged without a balancer, large differences in the cell voltage
become apparent very quickly. This not only shortens the operating life (as one cell may
have a very low voltage), but also damages the battery as a result of a total discharge.
In addition, without the balancer, there is the danger of overcharging when charging
such different cells (with different voltage): the maximum permitted voltage of a LiPo
cell of approx. 4.2V (+/- 1%) is exceeded!
(For information on Lilon and LiFe, see chapter 7)
Example:
A dual-cell LiPo battery pack charged without the use of a balancer appears to have a voltage of 8.4V
and thus appears to be fully charged. However, the two cells have a respective voltage of 4.5V and 3.9V
(one cell is dangerously overloaded, the other is half-empty).
A cell overloaded in this way may leak or, in a worst case scenario, catch fire or explode!
If your LiPo battery pack has a balancer connection, the charging program "BALANCE" should always
be used.
If your "LiFe" or "LiIon" pack also has a balancer connection, the above information applies analogously,
only the voltage values differ, see chapter 7.
d) Fast charge ("FAST CHG")
When charging a lithium battery, the fuller the battery is, the smaller the charge current becomes due to
the charge procedure used for lithium batteries. Of course, this also increases the charging time.
A special charging procedure achieves a higher charge current in fast charging. However, this reduces
the capacity, because the charge process is terminated earlier due to the safety cut-off in the charger.
This means, a LiPo battery, for example, cannot be fully charged using the fast charge function. Only
approx. 90% of the capacity achievable with the normal charge process is available.
Therefore, fast charging is only wise if the battery has to be used again as quickly as
possible.
The procedure of setting the charge current and the voltage/cell count is the same as with the normal
charge process (see chapter 10. b).
