pump into the conveyed medium. If pumps are used on
a muddy or sandy bottom, they are to be installed hang-
ing from a cable with the suction opening at least 30 cm
above the bottom so that the admission sieve is protected
against obstruction.
Check valve
The pump comes already fitted with a check valve. It is
integrated into the pump housing.
Float switch for intercoupling
Pumps without a float switch can be retrofitted with a
HOMA float switch for intercoupling. The electrical con-
nection is made by interposing the float switch between
the socket and the mains plug of the pumps.
For retrospective installation, secure the float cable to
the pump, to the riser tube or to some other permanently
installed point in accordance with the desired switching
distance and switching level. In no event may the float
with cable simply be thrown into the conveyed medium,
since correct switching on and off is possible only when
the float rotates around the fastening point of the cable.
Possible consequences of non-compliance are flooding
(pump does not switch on), or destruction of the pump by
running dry (pump does not switch off).
Important: After any alteration of the float fastening, fault-
less operation of the float switch is to be checked without
fail by means of a trial run.
5.3. Use of chains
Chains are used to lower a pump into the operating space
or to draw it out. They are not intended for securing a sus-
pended pump.
To use chains for their intended purpose, proceed as fol-
lows:
•
Fasten one end of the chain to the eye provided for
that purpose or to the handle of the pump
•
Fasten the other end to the hoist.
•
Tighten the chain and hoist the pump slowly and un-
der control.
•
Then swivel the pump over the operating space and
lower it carefully.
•
Lower the pump to the operating point and ensure
that the pump is standing securely.
•
Remove the chain from the hoist and secure it to
the chain retainer situated at the upper edge of the
operating space. This ensures that the chain cannot
fall into the operating space and does not present a
hazard to enyone.
5.4. Commissioning
The section contains all important instructions for the op-
erating staff for the safe commissioning and operation of
the machine. The following information must be complied
with and checked without fail:
•
type of installation
•
mode of operation
•
minimum water cover / max. immersion depth
These details are also to be checked after a prolonged
standstill period, and any defects discovered are to be
eliminated.
The operating and maintenance manual must always
be kept at the machine, or in a place intended for that
purpose, where it is always accessible to all operating
staff.
In order to prevent damage to property or injury to per-
sons while commissioning the machine, the following
points are absolutely to be complied with:
The commissioning of the machine may only be
•
performed by persons qualified for the purpose
who comply with safety instructions.
•
All personnel who work on the machine must have
received, read and understood the operating instruc-
tions,.
•
Before commissioning, enable all safety devices and
emergency-off circuits.
•
Electrotechnical and mechanical settings may only be
made by knowledgeable persons.
•
This machine is only suitable for use under the stated
operating conditions.
5.5. Preparatory work
The machine has been designed, constructed and assem-
bled in accordance with the latest state of the art so that,
under normal operating conditions, it will give long and
reliable service. It is a prerequisite for this, however, that
you comply with all requirements and instructions. Small
oil leaks at the slide ring seal on delivery are harmless, but
they must be eliminated before the pump is lowered into
or immersed in the conveyed medium.
Please check the following points:
•
Cable routeing – no loops, lightly tensioned
•
Check the temperature of the conveyed medium and
the immersion depth – see machine data sheet
•
If a hose is used on the pressure side, it is to be
rinsed with clear water before use, so that no depos-
its cause blockages
•
In a wet well installation, the pump sump is to be
cleaned
•
The piping system on the pressure and the suction
side is to be cleaned and all valves are to be opened
•
The pump housing must be flooded, i.e. it must
be filled completely with the medium and it must
not contain any more air. Venting can be done with
suitable venting devices in the plant or with venting
screws at the discharge outlet, if present.
•
Check accessories, piping system and suspension
arrangement for secure and correct seating
