Instructions for use for the IKAR controlled descent device of type
ABS 4 W / WH / WHPL / WHSL
DIN EN 341:2011/1A / 1496:2017/A, ANSI/ASSE Z359.4-2013
Introduction
The IKAR controlled descent device types ABS 4 W /WH / WHPL / WHSL are evacuation or rescue devices with which one
or more persons can descent from a higher to a lower location at limited speed using the pendulum technique. With type ABS
4 WH / WHPL / WHSL a person can in addition be pulled up from a lower to a higher location by a helper. If necessary to lift
the person during an emergency situation the controlled descent device ABS 4 WH / WHPL / WHSL should be used. The
IKAR type ABS 4 W / WH / WHPL / WHSL controlled descent device shouldt be used for its specified purpose in accordance
with these instructions for use. The instructions for use shouldt be read in full and their contents understood before use
(
)
. A rescue plan shouldt exist for all possible emergencies at work. In the scope of application of the ANSI/ASSE
1
standard, the applicable regulations on the safe implementation of rescue operations as well as the standards ANSI/ASSE
Z359.1 and ANSI/ASSE Z359.4 are to be observed.
Safety area instructions for use
1.
Non-observation of the instructions for use can endanger life! The descent device shouldt not be altered or added to
in any way. With the use of personal fall protection systems injuries cannot eliminated but reduced.
2.
The device may only be used by persons who have been appropriately trained and who are confident in the use of
the device. They shouldt not suffer from any health impairments! (problems with alcohol, drugs or the influence of
medicines, or cardiovascular problems)
3.
The device is only approved for rescuing people, the device is certified for the rescue of persons. The Lifting and
Lowering of loads is not permitted
the maximum descent height is 200 m
4.
The legibility of the product designation should be checked before each use. A visual and function check of the type
ABS 4 W / WH / WHPL / WHSL descent device shouldt be performed. For this the device should be attached to a
suitable location and the protruding ropes pulled alternately. A noticeable brake resistance shouldt develop
(
)
. Check the connectors for faultless function (self-closing, lockable), EN 362, ANSI/ASSE Z359.12. All nchorages
4
shouldt be tight and the swivel should rotate smoothly.
5.
The descent rope should be checked for perfect condition along its entire length and full circumference. A device with
a damaged rope shouldt not be used. Except is equipment which is sealed in a special, undamaged storage bag
(
).

6.
If there are doubts as to the safe condition of the device it should be taken out of service and made available for
testing by a specialist, trained by the manufacturer. The specialist decides on further use.
7.
The device shouldt never be opened or repaired without authority. This may only be done by specialists who have
been suitably trained by the manufacturer
8.
The device shouldt be inspected by an authorised person after each rescue, as required and at least once annually.
This shouldt be documented in the log book! Inspections intervals can be extended by the manufacturer if the devices
are sealed in a undamaged storage bag.
9.
The permissible temperature range for the ABS 4 W / WH / WHSL / WHPL devices lies between -4° and + 50°C /
(
+25° and +122° F
7
device may occur due to icing of the rope. If kept dry, the devices also work in extremely cold temperatures of up to
-40°C / - 40 F.
10.
Only the IKAR KMS 10.5 core mantle rope to EN 1891:1998 may be used as descent rope. Descent ropes reach their
replacement state of wear after a maximum of 10 years.
11.
Descenting device which are permanently installed at a workplace and be left there between inspections shouldt be
protected against environmental influences in appropriate manner (e.g. sealed in special packaging and weatherproof
containers).
12.
The device can be used vertically, horizontally or at an angle,
protection shouldt be used.
13.
Persons who are suspended in a fall protection belt for some time can suffer a suspension trauma (orthostatic shock).
Suspension periods of more than 15 minutes should be avoided. Start rescue immediately, support the person
according to special first aid rules after rescue.
14.
A suitably sustainable anchoraget point should be selected for the device
elements. The connectors shouldt always be closed to prevent accidental opening. The anchorage point shouldt be
able to withstand a load to EN 795 / ANSI/ASSE Z359.4 (22,2 kN). The attached is done with a suitable connecting
element according to EN 362 / ANSI/ASSE Z259.12 and without interfere the descenting process. Attach the device
as vertically as possible above the user. The descent rescue device may be connected to the anchorage point by
using anchorage elements according to EN 354, EN 795 Kl. B, EN 362 or EN 358 / ANSI/ASSE Z359.4 in a way they
don't interfere with the descenting process. Follow the instruction of the anchorage elements
15.
An chosen anchorage point at an existing construction in Germany shouldt at least be suitable for a load of 9 kN, as
evidenced by the applicable technical building regulations .Baubestimmungen .
16.
All persons involved in the rescue operation, shouldt be secured against falling and ensure the a permanent possibility
