Section X - Troubleshooting
Some of the common problems are as follows:
Problem
Genius™ Checker / Calibrator will not
power up
Test report does not write to USB
flash drive
Multiple Genius™ 3 Thermometers
fail recalibration
Error 2 or Error 3 repeatedly appears
Error 6 repeatedly appears while testing
the same Genius™ 3 Thermometer
Error 9 repeatedly appears
Genius™ 3 Thermometer seems
to read high or low following a
successful recalibration
Genius
Checker/Calibrator
TM
Probable Cause
Genius™ Checker / Calibrator not receiving AC power
Blown fuse
USB flash drive not formatted
USB flash drive write protected
USB flash drive does not contain enough free memory space
USB flash drive incompatible with Genius™ Checker/Calibrator
Genius™ Checker / Calibrator has not had enough time to
detect the newly inserted USB flash drive
Use a USB flash drive with an activity light. If when installed
the light does not indicate activity, an internal USB driver error
may have occurred.
Probe cover stuck in one of the blackbody targets
Dirty probe cover
Dirty thermometer lens
Genius™ 3 Thermometer not seated correctly
Genius™ 3 Thermometers, probe covers, and/or checker/
calibrator not at room temperature.
Residue present on pins of connector on the cable or on
the pads of Genius™ 3 Thermometer board in battery
compartment, interfering with electrical contact.
Potential power consumption issue with
Genius™ 3 Thermometer
Genius™ Checker/Calibrator, Genius™ 3 Thermometer, and/or
probe covers outside of allowed ambient range
Probe cover reused during calibration check / recalibration
Probe covers handled during calibration check / recalibration
Genius™ 3 Thermometer or Probe covers heated
Higher temperature than target detected
Probe cover reused during calibration check / recalibration
Corrections
Check AC power connections
Replace fuse
Use PC or laptop to format flash drive
Use PC or laptop to turn off write protection
Use PC or laptop to delete unnecessary items or use different USB flash drive
Use different USB flash drive. A USB flash drive with a FAT32 file system is recommended.
Retry write process
Switch off the Checker/Calibrator and switch it back on.
Remove probe cover from blackbody target using small needle-nose pliers or hemostats.
Do not scratch the interior surface of the target.
Use a new probe cover for each reading. Do not re-use a probe cover.
Probe covers should never be touched by hand.
Clean the thermometer lens per the instructions in the Genius™ operating manual.
Ensure that the Genius™ 3 Thermometer is completely seated in the target and at the
proper angle.
Ensure that the Genius™ 3 Thermometers, probe covers, and/or checker/ calibrator have
had enough time to equilibrate to room temperature before proceeding.
Clean pins of cable connector or pads of thermometer board with a cotton swab dipped
in isopropyl alcohol. Allow the isopropyl alcohol to evaporate fully before continuing.
Repeat calibration check / recalibration with a different Genius™ 3 Thermometer and
return problem thermometer for factory servicing.
Ensure that Genius™ Checker/Calibrator, Genius™ 3 Thermometer, and probe covers have
acclimated to the allowable ambient range specified in Section XIII
Repeat calibration check / recalibration using a new probe cover prior to every target
insertion during the process.
Repeat calibration check / recalibration without handling probe covers.
Place Genius™ 3 Thermometers and probe covers together in the same area for
calibration but away from heat sources for enough time to equilibrate to room
temperature before proceeding. Do not place the Genius™ 3 Thermometer or probe
covers on top of Genius™ Checker/Calibrator panel.
Once a probe cover is installed on the Genius™ 3 Thermometer, do not point the
thermometer at a heat source (such as the Genius™ Checker/Calibrator's LCD, hands,
fingers or a light source) before inserting into the target.
Repeat calibration check / recalibration using a new probe cover prior to every target
insertion during the process.
