8.4 Responding to a CO alarm
■
The following actions are only suggestions only. The actual circumstances
may require different protocols.
■
If in any doubt, consult a qualified professional to develop a suitable action
plan.
If the carbon monoxide detector/alarm sounds, it is crucial to take immediate and effective
action to ensure your safety and the safety of others. Follow these steps:
1. Immediately close gas valves (if applicable).
2. Open windows to maximize ventilation.
■
Open all windows and doors to allow fresh air to circulate and reduce the concentration
of CO indoors.
3. Evacuate the Premises.
■
Do not ignore the alarm. Assume that the alarm indicates dangerous levels of carbon
monoxide.
■
Immediately evacuate all occupants, including pets.
■
Move to a location with fresh air, preferably outside the building.
4. Call Emergency Services.
■
Once you are in a safe location, call emergency services to report the alarm and the po-
tential CO leak.
■
Do not re-enter the building until it has been declared safe by professionals.
5. Check the CO detector.
■
If the alarm was found to be false after a professional assessment, ensure the CO de-
tector is correctly installed and is working correctly.
