4. Extending ladders
Locking devices shall be checked and be fully secured before use if
not operated automatically.
- The loose end of the rope shall be tied to the ladder (only if necessary due to design of ladder).
- By preference, slide an extending ladder out against a wall up to the required height.
- Ensure for multi-section ladders that the hooks properly grip onto or under (rope-operated ladders) the rungs.
- Make sure that it is only possible to climb the ladder from the extended side (except for rope-operated ladders).
- Make sure that the correct sequence is followed when sliding out the ladder: unlock the upper section of the ladder,

slide it out to the required height and then lock it into place. If the ladder has 3 sections, repeat this procedure with the
middle section.
- Always slide in the middle section of the ladder first of all (unlock, slide in, lock) and then the upper section of the
ladder (unlock, slide in, lock). Pay particular attention to ensuring that the ladder sections are locked and unlocked at
the right time.
5. Single or multi-hinge joint ladders
If the ladder is being used as a platform, only decks recommended
by the ladder manufacturer may be used. The deck must be secu-
red before use (only if necessary due to the design of the ladder).

Make sure that all hinges are locked.
- Single or multiple joint ladders should be folded when lying on the ground and not in its use position.
- Do not operate the hinges when someone is standing on the folding ladder.
- Do not climb folding ladders erected in the 'M' or 'Z' configurations. These configurations are intended
solely for the use of the folding ladder as a worktable (figure 1).
- Do not stand on the horizontal wall support section of the folding ladder (figure 1).
- Folding ladders that can be used in the scaffolding configuration must be fitted with a suitable platform prior to use.
This platform is available from the manufacturer. Always verify that this platform is correctly positioned, also after
repositioning the folding ladder (figure 2).
